Key Labor Law Updates for 2026
The UAE government has introduced several amendments to Federal Law No. 10 of 2017 on Domestic Workers, strengthening protections and modernizing the regulatory framework.
1. Mandatory Digital Contracts
All domestic worker contracts must now be registered digitally through the MOHRE portal. Handwritten or verbal agreements are no longer valid. This ensures transparency and legal enforceability.
2. Enhanced Wage Protection System (WPS)
The WPS, previously mandatory for private sector employees, has been extended to domestic workers. Employers must now pay salaries through bank transfers or approved digital wallets, creating a verifiable payment record.
3. Expanded Annual Leave
Domestic workers are now entitled to 30 days of paid annual leave (previously 21 days). Unused leave days can be carried forward or encashed at the end of the contract.
4. End-of-Service Gratuity
Domestic workers are now eligible for end-of-service gratuity, calculated as 14 days of basic salary per year of service for the first 5 years, and 30 days per year thereafter.
5. Mental Health Provisions
Employers must now provide access to mental health support. Domestic workers are entitled to confidential counseling sessions, with costs covered by the employer's health insurance.
6. Transfer of Sponsorship
The process for transferring sponsorship between employers has been simplified. Workers who have completed their contract can transfer without needing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the previous employer.
7. Anti-Harassment Protections
Stronger penalties have been introduced for employers who harass or abuse domestic workers. This includes fines up to AED 50,000 and potential imprisonment. Anonymous reporting channels have been established.
What Employers Need to Do
Register on the MOHRE portal, set up WPS-compliant salary payments, update existing contracts to digital format, and ensure health insurance includes mental health coverage.
What Workers Need to Know
You now have stronger legal protections. Keep records of your contract, salary payments, and leave balance. If your rights are violated, you can file a complaint with MOHRE online or at 80060.
